Level 3 – Make your sentences longer.

Lesson 51. Cause and Effect & Move things

This is lesson 51 of JAEM Korean’s 10-Minute Korean Video Course.
Over the course of a week, we’ll study grammar patterns and vocabulary-focused conversations.

1. Grammar Focus

Learn the main grammar point of the week clearly and simply.

This Week’s Grammar Explained Simply

‘A/V-아/어/해서’ is used to say that a subsequent result or action occurred due to a preceding reason or cause.

It does not combine with ‘-았/었/했-‘.
Ex) 어제 눈이 왔어서 길이 막혔어요. (X)
어제 눈이 와서 길이 막혔어요. (O)

It is not used with imperative or request sentences.
Ex) 날씨가 좋아서 산책할까요? (X)
날씨가 좋아서 산책합시다! (X)

2. Pattern Practice

Practice the grammar through useful sentence patterns.

Practice Grammar with Sentence Patterns

비가 와서 집에 있었어요.
It rained so I stayed at home.

식탁이 필요해서 사러 갈 거예요.
I need a dining table, so I’m going to go buy one.

어제 많이 걸어서 다리가 아파요.
My legs hurt because I walked a lot yesterday.

모르는 단어가 많아서 너무 어려웠어요.
It was so difficult because there were so many words I didn’t know.

커피가 마시고 싶어서 카페에 갈 거예요.
I want some coffee, so I’m going to a cafe.

3. Teacher’s Tips

Get practical tips and common mistake warnings from a JAEM teacher.

JAEM Teacher’s Special Grammar Tips

One special note:
In grammar rules, “-아/어서” does not combine with the past tense.

운동했어서 힘들어요.

But in real-life conversations, Koreans often do use it with the past tense, and you will hear it a lot.

So even though it’s not grammatically standard, it’s very common in spoken Korean.

4. Word Power

Learn key vocabulary with natural example sentences.

This Week’s Vocabulary with Example Sentences

옮기다.
상자가 무거워서 방까지 못 옮겼어요.
I couldn’t move it to the room because the box was heavy.

들다.
힘들어서 혼자 못 들었어요.
I couldn’t lift it alone because it was too hard.

놓다.
예쁜 꽃을 방에 놨어요.
I put the pretty flowers in the room.

두다.
우산을 문 옆에 뒀어요.
I left the umbrella next to the door.

떨어뜨리다.
실수로 컵을 떨어뜨렸어요.
I accidentally dropped the cup.

줍다.
돈이 바닥에 떨어져서 다시 주웠어요.
The money fell on the floor, so I picked it up again.

5. Real Dialogues

Improve fluency by reading, listening to, and copying real dialogues.

Dialogue Practice: Read, Listen, and Write

유진: 이사하면서 안 힘들었어요?
진수: 힘들었어요. 상자가 무거워서 거실에서 침실까지 못 옮겼어요.
유진: 침실까지 옮겼어요?
진수: 아니요, 힘들어서 혼자 못 들었어요.
유진: 그럼 어디에 두었어요?
진수: 복도에 두고 나중에 옮겼어요.’

Yujin: Wasn’t it hard while moving?
Jinsu: It was hard. The box was heavy, so I couldn’t move it from the living room to the bedroom.
Yujin: You moved it to the bedroom?
Jinsu: No, it was hard, so I couldn’t lift it by myself.
Yujin: Then where did you put it?
Jinsu: I left it in the hallway and moved it later.

6. Topic Boost

Expand your vocabulary with words related to this week’s topic.

Topic-Based Vocabulary Expansion

‘옮기다’ means to move, but don’t confuse it with ‘이사하다.’

‘옮기다’ is used when you move things or positions —like moving a desk, moving files, or changing a place.

‘이사하다’ is used only when people move to a new home.

7. Quick Review with Quiz
